B1G Media Day: Live Blog

Follow in all day as we will have the latest from all the big ten teams here in Chicago at Big Ten Media Day.

12:22 P.M. - Stepped out of the main room after Beckman's appearance. Beckman seemed more upbeat than usual today. His three seniors he brought with him, Cvijanovic, Teitsma, and Davis, all fielded questions from the media. Taylor spoke with them and we will have more on their thoughts soon. I also caught up with Beckman to chat about the importance of Chicago and also a little about recruiting and how the philosophy has adapted since he got here.

10:30 A.M. - Tim Beckman began with a brief statement about the late Shawn Afryl. Some of his speaking points included the competition at quarterback and the huge task of replacing a four-year starter in Nathan Scheelhaase. Illinois returns 40 of 50 members of the two-deep and he hopes that another year of experience for last year's young defense will start to show this fall, especially in the secondary. He ended his portion by wishing his mother a happy birthday.

10:10 A.M - Wisconsin's Gary Andersen said no doubt about Melvin Gordon as the starter at running back but said Corey Clement also hungry to get snaps. Front 7 on defense is a bit of a concern but he's optimistic. Once the offensive line gets healthy, he feels like they will be strong as usual. Andersen said the schedule is not an easy one, cited the LSU game as a prime example. Has a young team but is pairing veterans with youth in practices.

9:55 A.M. - Darrell Hazell of Purdue citing physical improvement as a result of conditioning program as one of the biggest signs of offseason progress. Also singled out the point of attack at the offensive/defensive lines as an area in which they must improve.

9:45 A.M. - Pat Fitzgerald's statement mainly addressed academic success (team as a whole had upwards of 3.0 GPA). Said spring injuries were detrimental to defensive line progress but expects guys to be back for summer ball. Expects big things from returning starting QB Trevor Siemian. Union issue has been put on the back burner for now, but the team has shown great leadership, especially with the struggles to end last season.

8:55 A.M - Hey, everyone! Football season is almost here and that means Big Ten Media Day is upon us and the season is about to get kicked off. Follow in here all day as we will have coverage from the event in Chicago, including plenty of Illinois news and notes throughout the day.
